Only Human

Compared to a God of infinite ability, it seems like limitations are a defining factor of the human experience. We spend a good deal of effort in life trying to overcome the impediments of our humanity; but what if, in doing so, we’re actually overwriting the parts of life that give it meaning? Instead of viewing our humanity as fundamentally flawed, what if we were created to embrace our limits in order to truly thrive?

It’s easy to think that if we improve our health and fitness it will protect us against the frailty of our bodies, but does it really? What if true strength is found not through denying our weakness, but embracing it?

Our world is a complex place, and there are many things that we don’t understand. Often, we do our best to cope with this by oversimplifying problems, and eliminating grey areas from our thinking. But when we become close-minded and rigid, are we also closing ourselves off from God’s work in our lives?

When God created humanity, He said that “it is not good” for us to be alone; yet the relationships we build are always imperfect. Why did God wire us with a deep emotional need for community that seems impossible for others to fully meet? Are we approaching relationships the wrong way?

All it takes is a birthday or a tragedy to remind us that life is short. We try to make the most of life by saying yes to a wide array of activities, experiences, and people, because part of us believes that a full life means a full calendar. Yet, isn’t there a point, where the more things we add to our lives, the more we diminish our quality of life? In our pursuit of a more meaningful life, are we actually emptying life of its richness and beauty?
