Lent has begun, a season of contemplation, growth, and repentance. But what really is the purpose of confession? At moments in history, the practice of confession has been abused to keep people trapped in shame and/or to reinforce a works-righteous, restitution-based relationship with God. But God’s true purpose for confession is not to imprison us in shame or demand propitiation, instead it is to set us free.
